Born in Switzerland in 1865, Felix Vallotton was a painter, sculptor, writer and graphic artist. He settled in Paris in 1882, where he was a friend of Bonnard and Vuillard, and eventually became a French citizen in 1900.
Vallotton’s enthusiasm for Japanese prints influenced his style, which is essentially naturalistic but which also shows an almost abstract feeling for simplified form. He painted nudes, landscapes and interiors and, in about 1890, began to make woodcuts, consequently playing a part, along with Gauguin and Munch, in the revival of interest in this technique in the early years of the 20th Century. Felix Vallotton died in 1925.
