Roy Lichtenstein was born...WAAW!... in New York and began his art activities at high school. A jazz nut, he painted... OOH BOP SHE BAM!... the musicians he saw in the 52nd Street clubs. After high school he began a fine arts course but hardly had his feet under the easel when KERPOW SPLATT WHAAM!... the Second World War began, making it necessary for him to lend a hand pacifying some pesky... EAT LEAD FRITZ... BAM BAM! foreigners.
During the early 1950s he worked as a draughtsman whilst submitting work to exhibitions without... OH SHUCKS... WILL I NEVER GET FAMOUS... much success at all. Around this time he painted the first thing that looked like the stuff that would later make his name. It was a picture of a dollar bill. However, it didn't have much of an impact on the art world or Roy (but sure fooled that dumbo down at the grocery store).
At the beginning of the 1960s, just after he'd met Claes Oldenburg and Jim Dine and was thinking about art and pop culture, one of Roy's kids said (in the endearing way that children do)... 'HEY POP, IF YOU RECKON YOU'RE AN ARTIST, WHY CAN'T YOU PAINT AS GOOD AS THEM GUYS WHAT DO THE COMIC STRIPS!? (or jibes to that effect). What red-blooded American could fail to take up that challenge?...ERR... GOOD POINT, KID. Roy was off, rustling up at least half a dozen massive comic strip frame pictures and getting them accepted for exhibition at a top gallery. And...WOW! LOOK WHAT THE OLD MAN JUST PAINTED... WADDA HERO!.. after that, there was no looking back.
